Finding Ourselves Within Ancient Wisdom Traditions
Part I: Enneagrams

with Jennifer Manlowe

Enneagram is a Greek word – ennea (meaning "nine") and gram (meaning something written or drawn) – and refers to the nine points, nine basic personality types described.
Enneagram is a Greek word – ennea (meaning “nine”) and gram (meaning something written or drawn) – and refers to the nine points, nine basic personality types described.

The Enneagram* is a tool of spiritual transformation combining ancient wisdom with modern psychology and spirituality.

Firmly based on the belief that we have gifts that are necessary parts of the whole, Enneagram is simply a tool that can assist us in returning to the person we are at the core.

From here, we contribute to the whole.

Enneagram has identified nine “core personality types” and provides ways to help us discover which type we are (or ways we can be in relationships).

In this introductory workshop, you will:

  • Recognize the personality types of people in your life as well as your own personality.
  • Discover more effective ways of working with and relating to others.
  • Grow to recognize Grace in others and celebrate each one’s unique contribution to the whole.

Introduction to Meister Eckhardt

  with Kimberly Beyer-Nelson

He was a Dominican priest, a man of the turbulent Middle Ages &mdasgl bound by the theological expectations of the Church, yet with a heart as wide open as the sky.

He has been called a bridge between Eastern and Western mysticism, the man from whom God hid nothing.

Zen masters have claimed he was enlightened, and the modern Christian can only marvel at the radical nature of his monotheism.

Come and meet Meister Eckhardt — through his own words — and learn why he prayed so fervently these words:
“God save me from my idea of god.”

Celtic Christian Spirituality

  with Sue Sutherland-Hanson

Enjoy the intrigue and beauty of the history of Celtic Spirituality.

The combination of primal Celtic spirituality and the Celt’s enthusiasm for the stories of Jesus and the Spirit of Christ produced a gentler version of Christianity that brought Celtic Christians into conflict with the orthodox leaders of Rome.

In this workshop, we will consider how this Celtic vision resonates with Christian Mystics, Eastern streams of Christianity, as well as diverse spiritual traditions today.

Join Sue for a time of teaching and creative modes of exploring how the enduring Celtic views of creation, life, and the beyond may enliven your spirituality.

Introduction to Vedanta

  with Kimberly Beyer-Nelson

Advaita Vedanta is the philosophical base of much of modern Hinduism. The name means “the end of the Vedas” or in other words, the summation of the Vedas, the oldest written scriptures in the world.

Drawing from the Upanishads, the Brahma-sutras and the Bhagavad Gita (Song of the Lord), Vedanta teaches a radical monotheism that sings with poetic intuition and a wise seeing into the deepest reality of all things.
Join Kim Beyer-Nelson as she walks you through some of the central ideas of Advaita Vedanta and encourages you to dialogue about the connections and contrasts you will find with your own faith journey.

Haiku

with Carmi Soifer

writing with a finger
in the clear blue sky…
“autumn dusk”
— Kobayashi Issa

Carmi Soifer, M.Ed.,
is an award-winning poet and writing teacher.

She brings decades of experience, care, and spirituality to her classes.

Carmi has taught  community workshops on both coasts, and was Artist-in-Residence at Rocky Mountain National Park.

This class will help you enter the art of haiku by gaining an understanding of modern English-language haiku, as well as some aesthetics from the traditional Japanese.

The emphasis is on your own writing — how to take two images and let a spark light between them, how to work with season words and emotion, how to non-judgmentally approach each moment.

Participants will find themselves looking at life’s moments in a new way as we learn to “sketch from life” and take in the fall season.

The class is experiential and fun, and is open to anyone.

When: Saturday Mornings
Nov. 3 & 17
10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Cost: $40 by Oct. 29
